ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A juvenile has been taken into custody after a fight led to a man’s death in Asheville Saturday evening.
According to a news release from the Asheville Police Department (APD), officers responded to “a report of a fight with weapons” at an apartment complex near Depot Street around 7:22 p.m. on July 13.
A spokesperson with APD clarified with 828newsNOW the report of a fight with weapons was coded by dispatch. Officers responded to Livingston Apartments and when they arrived, “they found a man with serious injuries resulting from blunt force trauma sustained during a physical altercation (no weapons.)”
The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Caleb Savon Gilliam. He was taken to Mission Hospital where he died from his injuries.
Police said the 17-year-old suspect, whose identity is being withheld due to age, has been charged with first-degree murder. The juvenile has been turned over to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
