ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Someone posing as a member of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office has been making phone calls. This time, the scammer is posing as a deputy and demanding payment for civil process debts, the sheriff’s office said in a social media post. The person has even provided a callback number to a legitimate-sounding voicemail.
“If you receive this call, DO NOT CALL BACK,” the Facebook post said. “If you receive a call from someone posing as a Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office member asking for money, gift cards, or bitcoin it is a scam.”
The sheriff’s office will never request payment over the phone.
