ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville police are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred early Friday morning.

A press release from the Asheville Police Department (APD) says officers responded to a report of a gunshot wound at the Hillcrest apartment complex on Atkinson Street around 2:24 a.m. on July 26.

At the scene, they found 31-year-old Denzel Mcknight suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to Mission Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives with APD’s Criminal Investigations Division are currently investigating the deadly shooting. Officials say no arrests have been made in this case yet.

Police noted that this is the 7th homicide of the year within city limits.
