ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — If you’re wondering why you received a text message about North Carolina toll roads, that might just be a scam.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) shared in late July that the state’s Turnpike Authority had been alerted to a text message-based scam, also known as smishing, fraudulently claiming to represent tolling agencies from across the country. The scammers are claiming to represent the tolling agency and requesting payment for unpaid tolls.
BEWARE PHONE SCAMMERS PRETENDING TO BE POLICE
“The targeted phone numbers seem to be chosen at random and are not uniquely associated with an account or usage of toll roads,” DOT’s release noted.
Western North Carolina residents may have found this stranger than others since there are only three toll roads in North Carolina — two in the Charlotte area and one in the Raleigh area.
