BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Congratulations are in order for 12-year-old Maya LeRoy whose ‘I Voted’ sticker design won Buncombe County’s 2024 Youth Election Sticker contest!
The contest gave young folks a chance to participate in election services while showing off their creative skills.
Buncombe County officials said artists from ages five to 18 years old submitted 69 sticker designs, which were then narrowed down to 10 finalists. Nearly 6,000 people viewed those final designs on the Engage.BuncombeCounty.org website, a county news release said, and more than 2,300 people voted for their favorite design.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VOTING IN THE GENERAL ELECTION
“We are thrilled to have received so many submissions for our second sticker contest,” Election Services Director Corinne Duncan said in a press release. “Thousands of people voted on these designs. I’m happy that these young artists stirred so much buzz; they should all be very proud.”
The Asheville City Schools rising seventh grader said she’s excited her design won because she wanted to get a message across to voters.
“I want voters to know that it is important for all different types of people to vote because they should get to have a say in the people that will run our country,” Maya said in a release, adding a little more background about her design, “the heart is for love and the colors are for diversity.”
HOW ELECTION OFFICIALS ENSURE A FAIR, ACCURATE COUNT
“Maya’s design will be available to all Buncombe County voters in the upcoming presidential election,” Duncan said. “Don’t worry, if you prefer the more traditional route, regular stickers will also be available.”
Finalists will be recognized at an upcoming Board of Commissioners meeting.
