OLD FORT, N.C. (828newsNOW) — An Old Fort man was arrested on a slew of charges after vehicle and foot pursuits earlier this month.

McDowell County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Caleb Baliles spotted James William “JW” Effler, 46, driving a truck in the Old Fort community on Aug. 8 and knew he had outstanding warrants.

Baliles attempted to stop the truck, and a pursuit ensued, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The chase ended on Columbia Carolina Road, where Effler attempted to flee on foot. He was taken into custody after a brief foot chase.

Deputies determined the truck Effler was driving had been reported stolen by a Marion business on Aug. 1, the news release said.

Effler was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, reckless driving, driving while license revoked, injury to personal property and felony larceny of a motor vehicle. He was also served with 11 counts of failure to appear in court for prior charges.

Effler was ordered to be held without a bond on the vehicle offenses because he was out on bond for prior unrelated charges. He was issued a $65,000 bond on the failure to appear charges.

A search of Effler turned up suspected drugs and additional charges are pending analysis by the State Crime Lab, the news release said.
