I-40 East weekend closure planned in Asheville

The following is information from NCDOT:

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will install a familiar detour on Interstate 40 East in Asheville this weekend, weather permitting.

Crews from DBA Harrison Construction Company of Asheville plan to close I-40 East from the I-240 East/I-26 West interchange (Exit 46B) to Hendersonville Road (Exit 50) from 8 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday to work on the eastbound bridges over Hominy Creek and Hominy Creek Road. Like closures earlier this summer, this will allow contract crews to perform rehabilitation tasks on bridges between I-26 and Hendersonville Road (Exit 50).

Operations this weekend include hydro-demolition of old concrete and paving of the area approaching bridges.

The primary detour will utilize I-240 East. Digital signs across the area notify motorists to use I-240 East for I-40 East being closed ahead. The ramp from I-26 West to I-40 East will be closed with message boards alerting motorists to continue to I-240 East. The Brevard Road onramp to I-40 East will also be closed with traffic detoured to utilize the I-240 East detour route.

The $27.9 million interstate rehabilitation project includes roadway resurfacing and bridge overlays. It will also address spalling concrete on bridge substructure components — including the piers — and improve the riding surface of the four I-40 bridges over Hominy Creek and two bridges over the French Broad River. The contract calls for completion in the spring of 2026.

Patton Avenue/Carter Street closure

The following is information from the city of Asheville:

Beginning Thursday September 12, a portion of Carter Street will be closed to thru traffic from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. daily during the weekdays for approximately three weeks. The current three lane closure on Patton Ave will remain in place during this time, see map below.

“While we understand the inconvenience this lane closure may cause, drivers are encouraged to consider using I-240 or explore other available alternate routes to navigate downtown efficiently. If an emergency arises in these locations, we will make every attempt to assist emergency personnel with access.”

Two I-26 overnight closures scheduled to take place

The following is information from NCDOT:

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will utilize overnight closures of Interstate 26 two nights next week to safely conduct a variety of operations in Henderson County.

On Monday and Tuesday nights, I-26 East from U.S. 25 (Exit 44) to Upward Road (Exit 53) will close no earlier than 8 p.m. and open again by 6 a.m.

The marked detour each night will direct drivers along U.S. 25 south through Hendersonville, to U.S. 176 then to Upward Road back to I-26. The detours will include longer green lights to accommodate additional traffic from the interstate.

In addition, on Monday night in Buncombe County, crews plan to close the I-26 West offramp at Airport Road (Exit 40) and the I-26 East offramp at Long Shoals Road (Exit 37) to place permanent lane markings.

These operations are part of the I-26 Widening project which will reduce congestion and improve travel times upon completion.
