HALLOWEENTOWN, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Every day this month, resident horror movie enthusiast and 828newsNOW staff reporter Pruett Norris is recommending a Halloween film for your macabre amusement.
Whether they be monster movies or fearsome family films, demonic possessions or slasher sensations, this exercise hopes to encourage spooky seasonal “scream”ings at home or in cinemas.
As the old saying goes, “trick or treat, trick or treat, give me something good to…watch.”
Day 27: THE WITCH (2015, 92 min., directed by Robert Eggers)
Director Robert Eggers has a unique style of filmmaking.
Eggers films are rooted in history, fastidiously researched and authentically composed, often with an added bonus of folk horror as a reward for consorting with his work.
“The Witch: A New England Folk Tale” was Eggers’ first film and has been cemented as a modern horror classic for its commitment to its idea: What if an isolated Puritan family was beset by The Devil and a witch?
The movie is written entirely in period-accurate 17th-century dialogue and shot with natural light and candles and dressed its actors in colonial garb. The actors rose to the challenge: “The Witch” was even Anya Taylor-Joy’s break-through film role.
“The Witch” is quiet and unsettling, but a patient audience willing to turn off the lights and listen closely will find a terrifying presence among the trees. The ending is an all-timer.
“The Witch” is available to stream on Prime Video.
