ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — As the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center approaches, Asheville and Weaverville will host memorial ceremonies to honor lives lost during the tragedy.
The Asheville Fire Department and Asheville Police Department will hold their annual memorial service on Sept. 11, 2026, outside of the Asheville Municipal Building, 100 Court Plaza, Asheville, N.C.
“We are planing to hold a memorial service per usual outside of the municipal building downtown. We are planning to have speakers for AFD, APD and the city manager’s office,” said John Harbin, communication specialist for the Asheville Fire Department. “There may be more as our planning continues but that’s where we are at this time.”
In Weaverville, the annual 9/11 observance will be held at 11 a.m., Sept. 11, 2026, at the Weaverville Community Center, 60 Lakeshore Dr.
“This year marks the 25th anniversary of these tragic events. It is important that we remain united as a community, as a county, and as a nation to send of strong message, ‘We Will Never Forget,'” the town wrote in its monthly newsletter.
“The program will include an inspiration talk by Hank Shin, retired Colonel USAF and current co-pastor of Christ Disciple Mission Church. The Invocation and Benediction will be given by Reverend Dr. Stuart Lampkin of First Baptist Church of Weaverville. A medley of patriotic songs and the singing of the National Anthem will be performed by the Hominy Valley Acappella Christian Choir under the direction of Clay Plemmons. A moving video featuring the Rifle Squad of the Police Department and ‘Taps’ by the Fire Department, and ‘Amazing Grace’ performed by Harold Dusenberry on the bagpipes will conclude the program.”
