ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Buncombe County is giving residents a chance to do something good this Halloween season — and pick up a few treats along the way.
The county is teaming up with the American Red Cross for a community blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Pack Memorial Library, 67 Haywood St. in downtown Asheville.
The event will feature door prizes, Halloween-themed T-shirts and gift cards provided by the Red Cross.
But the biggest reward could be knowing you’ve helped save a life. According to the Red Cross, a single blood donation can help save up to three lives.
“Hosting a blood drive coincides with Buncombe County’s core values of giving back to the community,” said Carla Hollar, Swannanoa Library branch manager and organizer of the event. “With a simple blood donation, we can save the life of a coworker, loved one or neighbor.”
For Hollar, the cause is personal.
“My grandmother had leukemia and her experience convinced me to donate, starting as a teenager,” she said.
The Red Cross is looking for donors of all blood types, particularly those with O negative, B negative and A negative blood. O negative red blood cells can be transfused to patients of any blood type, making them especially important in emergencies.
Donated blood is used to help cancer patients, premature babies, organ transplant recipients and people seriously injured in accidents, among others.
Donors are encouraged to make appointments by calling 1-800-733-2767 or visiting RedCrossBlood.org and entering the sponsor code buncombecounty. Walk-ins are also welcome.
