ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828NewsNow.com) — Buncombe County leaders are seeking public input about the redesign of North Buncombe’s River Parks damaged by Helene.

According to a Nov. 4 news release, Buncombe County Parks & Recreation is partnering with the National Park Service – Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (NPS-RTCA) program to redesign and renew river parks in Northern Buncombe County. These include Alexander River Park, Ledges Whitewater River Park and Walnut Island River Park.

These river parks sustained significant damage during Helene over two years ago. Ledges Whitewater and Walnut Island lost shade trees and riparian vegetation, as well as some amenities, and Alexander, which remains closed, lost a large amount of land along its bank, the release said.

The county is reaching out to residents, asking them how they use these parks, how they want the parks to be used in the future and how the parks could be redesigned to make them easier to visit and enjoy, the release said.

The drop in-style workshop will be from 4-6 p.m. on Nov. 5 at Salt Face Mule Brewing Co. Officials will be on hand to hear how the community uses and wants to use the North Buncombe river parks. At the workshop, RCTA staff will provide information on the status of the three parks and give attendees a chance to share input.

Salt Face Mule Brewing Co. is located at 450 Weaverville Rd. in Asheville.

For those who can’t attend in person, there is an online survey on the Buncombe County website. It will be open through Nov. 19.

More information is available about the project on the North Buncombe River Parks Project page.
