ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828NEWSNOW) — A trash compactor fire at the Goodwill on Patton Avenue was quickly extinguished on Oct. 23 by Asheville Fire Department firefighters.

The fire was reported at approximately 2:30 p.m. and was put out in under half an hour, according to Asheville Fire Department Public Information Officer John Harbin.

This fire comes a year and three months after a warehouse caught fire at the same address.

“We had it under within 20 minutes. We got on the scene and got water on it,” Harbin said. “It’s just miscellaneous trash in a compactor that somehow caught fire. Obviously, we’re still investigating, and we’ll have more information later.”

When the warehouse behind Goodwill caught fire in July 2025, crews had to call for mutual aid for the large structure after the hydrant closest to the warehouse wasn’t working.

For the Oct. 23 fire, crews were able to successfully hook up to the hydrant to get water.
