ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A day that started with rain and storms could end with snow for some in Western North Carolina.
According to the National Weather Service, there’s a chance of snow near the North Carolina/Tennessee line tonight as cold air moves in. Rain is expected to develop after 7 p.m., possibly mixing with snow after 2 a.m.
The National Weather Service issued a Special Weather Statement for Avery, Graham, Haywood, Madison, Mitchell, Swain and counties warning of the possibility of snow. Accumulations of 1-2 inches are likely in those areas with locally higher amounts up to 3 inches possible. Snow should start to taper off by sunrise with a few lingering flurries possible through mid-morning Thursday.
- Tonight: A chance of rain showers after 7 p.m., mixing with snow after 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29. Blustery, with a northwest wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. Little or no snow accumulation expected.
- Thursday: Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 45. Breezy, with a northwest wind 21 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph.
- Thursday night: Increasing clouds, with a low around 29. Northwest wind 9 to 14 mph becoming light after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph.
- Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 63. Calm wind becoming south southwest 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph..
