ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Some Henderson County residents are being urged to evacuate because of a wildfire burning in Polk County.
Henderson County Emergency Management recommends voluntary evacuations of residents in the Laurel Mountain View Road and Boulder View Road areas because of Polk County’s wildfires.
An emergency shelter is now open in Henderson County at the Parks & Recreation Athletics and Activity Center, 708 South Grove St., Hendersonville.
As of Sunday night, thousands of acres were burning in Polk County, and several mandatory evacuation orders had been issued for that area.
POLK WILDFIRES RAGE, NC FOREST SERVICE TAKES COMMAND
The Black Cove Fire was last mapped at 2,076 acres, the North Carolina Forest Service said in a statement Sunday night. The fire burning on state-owned and private land in the Green River Gorge, about 2 miles northeast of Saluda was 0 percent contained.
The Fish Hook Fire was mapped at 199 acres, the North Carolina Forest Service said Sunday night. The fire burning on private land near Lake Adger, about 5 miles northwest of Mill Spring. was 50 percent contained and forward progress has been stopped.
The Deep Woods Fire was mapped at 2,545 acres, the forest service said. The fire on state-owned and private land in the Green River Gorge and in neighboring Holbert Cove community, about 5 miles northwest of Columbus, was 0 percent contained Sunday night.
