ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The Asheville Police Department issued a statement today mourning the loss of K9 Officer Bolo, a beloved dog on the force.
Bolo passed away yesterday evening after battling a fast-moving and aggressive medical condition.
Bolo joined the APD K9 force in 2018 and served for eight years with Senior Police Officer Nathaniel Smith.

The dedicated dog was highly trained, serving APD in a dual-capacity: Explosive Ordinance Disposal and patrol apprehension.
“He leaves us after eight years of honorable service to our community, our department, and, most importantly, SPO Smith and his family,” wrote APD Public Information Officer Rick Rice in a statement.
APD plans to honor Bolo and his service to the police force will be shared with the public so that they, too, may honor his memory.
