ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) —

Scattered thunderstorms are expected to return to Western North Carolina on Thursday afternoon, May 23, the National Weather Service reported in a hazardous weather outlook for the region.

“Coverage will be greatest over the mountains and foothills, but some storms are likely to move into the Piedmont and may linger through the evening.”

The outlook said storms could include cloud-to-ground lightning and said, “A few of the storms could become severe, posing risks of damaging wind and large hail.”

The National Weather Service said scattered thunderstorms also were forecast Friday through Sunday, including the possibility of damaging winds and large hail.

Asheville’s forecast called for a high of 81 degrees with mostly cloudy skies and showers likely in the afternoon hours.
