ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Asheville City Council has invited the community to apply for a position on four Helene Recovery Boards, panels intended to guide Asheville through the second year of recovery following Hurricane Helene.

The deadline to apply for a position is Sunday, Sept. 28. Applications can be submitted here.

Four boards

“These boards will provide input to City Council, share information within their networks, and ensure the community’s voice is central in shaping recovery strategies,” said Project Manager Alex Smith in a press release.

According to the release, the Helene Recovery Boards will cover the following:

Housing

Addressing post-disaster housing stability, exploring temporary and permanent housing solutions for displaced residents and proactive policies to reduce future displacement.

Economy

Rebuilding and revitalizing Asheville’s economy, expanding resilience and diversification, placemaking and long-term growth, advancing workforce development programs, broadening the city’s contractor pool for recovery projects and strengthening outreach to small and underrepresented businesses.

People & Environment

Policy recommendations that advance environmental sustainability, leveraging existing resources and tools, supporting neighborhood-level resilience and promoting community preparedness and engagement.

Infrastructure

The strategic rebuild of damaged infrastructure, including water systems, stormwater and flood management, parks, greenways, as well as recreation facilities and leveraging partnerships and funding programs for future resilience.

Members of the four Helene boards will aid future City Council decisions by sharing information obtained through their individual networks.

In addition to the temporary Helene boards, applications are also being accepted for advisory and quasi-judicial boards, the former of which will meet on an as-needed basis until June 30, 2027. Interested community members can apply here.
