ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — No criminal charges will be filed in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred Wednesday evening on Kreston Drive in the Bear Creek community, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.
After consulting with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, investigators determined that the use of deadly force was justified as an act of self-defense and defense of others inside the home, the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
Deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance and a possible gunshot just after 6 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they found 55-year-old William Jennings Bryan Clay III, of Kreston Drive, dead at the scene.
“This decision reflects the tireless effort of the patrol deputies, detectives and crime scene investigators who worked swiftly to gather an accurate account of the events that transpired,” BCSO District 2 Capt. Chris Stockton said in the statement. “Our laws allow individuals to defend themselves and/or third parties when in fear for their lives. This case highlights how the dedication of BCSO personnel to impartial fact-finding empowers those who act lawfully in self-defense.”
Stockton said the incident “has forever changed the lives of several community members,” extending condolences to those affected.
