ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office deputy was arrested late Wednesday on a charge of assault on a female, the second agency employee to face the same charge in less than two weeks.
Deputy Gregory Bembry was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility shortly after 10:30 p.m. Dec. 4 and is being held under no bond, according to the sheriff’s office. He has been placed on administrative leave while the agency conducts an internal review, which officials said is standard procedure.
Sheriff Quentin Miller said the agency will not comment further because of the pending criminal investigation.
“We will hold everyone accountable if they are found to have broken the law or our policies,” Miller said in a statement. “We are committed to this community and transparency, and this weighs heavily on us.”
The arrest comes after Buncombe County Detention Facility officer Trayvis Williams was taken into custody Nov. 25 by the Asheville Police Department, also on a charge of assault on a female. Williams was placed on administrative leave while the sheriff’s office conducts an internal review in that case.
