ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — Verizon customers across the Asheville area and beyond reported service disruptions Wednesday, with many phones displaying “SOS” instead of normal signal bars.

An employee at a Verizon store in Asheville confirmed there was an outage and said it appeared to be companywide. Several customers were inside the store seeking answers about why their phones were not working.

Reports of service problems also surfaced on social media. Multiple Facebook groups associated with the Asheville area included posts from users saying they were unable to make calls, send texts or access data.

“I was wondering why I had no service suddenly,” one person write in an online post.

Others reported no issues. “I still have full service. Weird,” said another, highlighting that the disruption did not appear to affect all customers equally.

National technology website TechRadar reported the apparent outage, citing widespread user complaints. Downdetector, a website that tracks service disruptions, showed a sharp spike in reported Verizon outages around noon Wednesday.

Verizon had not immediately released an official statement detailing the cause or scope of the issue. Meanwhile, users continued turning to social media for updates as they waited for service to be fully restored.
