ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A South Asheville crash that happened in April has led to a criminal charge after a woman involved in the collision died, according to the Asheville Police Department.

Officers responded around 2:53 p.m. April 20 to the 3300 block of Sweeten Creek Road for a report of a crash with injuries.

Investigators say a 2003 Toyota Echo, driven by Kathy King Dalton, was traveling southbound on Sweeten Creek Road when a 2020 Cadillac Escalade, driven by Jane Neill Hughes, pulled out of a parking lot attempting to turn left to head northbound. Police said the Escalade entered the Toyota’s path, resulting in the collision. Hughes was cited at the scene for unsafe movement.

Dalton was taken to Mission Hospital for treatment but died from her injuries April 29.

After what police described as a thorough investigation and consultation with the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office, Hughes was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. She later turned herself in at the Buncombe County Detention Facility and was released on a $5,000 unsecured bond set by a magistrate.
