ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A 64-year-old Asheville man was jailed Thursday after opening fire on deputies who were performing a wellness check.

As Buncombe County deputies approached the Pisgah View Road residence, they came under gunfire, with approximately four shots being fired, a news release from the sheriff’s office said. The deputies took cover until the Buncombe County Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiators arrived and secured the scene.

After a brief negotiation, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident, the news release said.

Douglas Bruce Wells was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault on a government official and one count of assault with a deadly weapon.

Wells was being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility.
