ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) –– An exciting holiday is coming up this weekend: National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day.
This weekend, National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day will be celebrated in Asheville at The Hop Ice Cream Cafe in collaboration with cereal catering company Chill Cereal Bar.
The Hop event will be held for breakfast, 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Feb. 1, at their north Asheville location, 635 Merrimon Ave.
In addition to its normal menu of flavors – the most unusual including Blueberry Kale and Lavender Vanilla – The Hop will be serving some breakfast inspired flavors and toppings from Chill Cereal.
The global holiday has its roots in Rochester, New York. According to the official website, the holiday began in 1966 when a woman named Florence J. Rappaport decided to distract her children from the cold February weather by serving ice cream for breakfast. They kept the tradition going and spread it worldwide – today, National Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is celebrated everywhere from Germany to China.
According to the site, there are only three rules for the holiday:
- Eat ice cream.
- On the first Saturday of February.
- For breakfast.
However, it is also traditionally celebrated on the first Saturday in February. The official site isn’t stringent about that fourth rule, though.
“Ice Cream for Breakfast Day officially falls on the first Saturday of every February. But we’re not picky,” the website wrote. “You could celebrate it on any weekend morning in February and it would still count with us.”
