ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The North Carolina Department of Transportation has announced that Interstate 26 will close between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. for three nights this week between Exit 33 and Exit 40. I-26 West will close Tuesday and Thursday, while I-26 East will close on Wednesday.
A contractor for the NCDOT will “safely smooth out and re-stripe the riding surface” during the closures, NCDOT said.
“Crews will utilize the overnight closures — planned pending dry weather — to safely diamond-grind the riding surface and apply new pavement markings. On Wednesday night, crews will also utilize the closure to install new overhead signs. These operations are part of the I-26 Widening project.”
I-26 detours
During the 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. closures, July 7-9, NCDOT suggests the following detours for I-26 travelers:
- Tuesday and Thursday nights: With I-26 West from Airport Road, Exit 40, to Brevard Road, Exit 33, closed, take Airport Road or Hendersonville Road as a detour.
- Wednesday night: With I-26 East from Brevard Road, Exit 33, to Airport Road, Exit 40, closed, take I-40 East, Hendersonville Road or Airport Road as a detour.
“Transportation officials remind drivers to remain alert, obey all posted signs traffic signs and follow marked detour routes for the safety of motorists and workers,” the NCDOT said.
