ASHEVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — The city of Asheville is looking for volunteers to assist the Asheville Transportation Department with its annual bike and pedestrian counts and greenway survey, vital components of grant applications and city planning.
The data collection will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 15, with volunteers needed through Sept. 19.
The bike and pedestrian count requires the enumeration of non-motorized travelers on Asheville streets at several locations.
Weekday counts will occur from 7-9 a.m. and 5-7 p.m., Sept. 15-17, while the Saturday, Sept. 19 count will occur from 9-11 a.m.
The greenway survey will require a more active role from volunteers, who will interview greenway users at the Wilma Dykeman or Reed Creek Greenways. The answers collected provide information about user behavior and the economic impact of the greenways, the city said. Multiple volunteers will be on-site for each collection session.
Sessions will be held from 8-10 a.m. and 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, and 8-10 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. In case of rain, Tuesday sessions will be moved to Thursday, Sept. 19.
The information collected “helps the City with future planning, grant applications, implementation of the GAP Plan, and better understanding behaviors and trends in Asheville’s multimodal transportation system,” the city said. “Help is needed for both efforts, and no special skills or prior experience is required. The City greatly appreciates all who volunteer, as this work could not be done without them.”
