Nightly closures from June 24-26 are expected as crews prepare for a major traffic shift; officials warn delays may extend into the weekend
WEAVERVILLE, N.C. (828newsNOW) — A traffic shift on Interstate 26 just east of Exit 19 is scheduled to begin this week as part of ongoing bridge construction, the Town of Weaverville said in a notice from the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Beginning Tuesday, June 24, westbound traffic will be moved onto a new alignment to allow work to continue on Stage III of the bridge project.
Nightly closures are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, and continue through Friday, June 26, when the traffic shift is expected to take place. Officials said weather conditions are being monitored and the shift could be delayed into the weekend if necessary.
If the transition is postponed, daily travel in the area may be affected once work begins, officials said.
The department emphasized that detours through Main Street in Weaverville are discouraged, noting that remaining on the interstate will generally provide faster travel times. Drivers are urged to use caution in the work zone and slow down near construction crews, as required by law.
